Last night it absolutely poured, bucketed down with rain as a front passed through.
Fortunately I was warm and dry in Princhester Hut, sharing with three rather smelly Te Araroa walkers who were just a week into their New Zealand walk Northbound (NOBO). They were smelly but very friendly.
The rain was forecast to continue through the morning so I decided to have a late start, and read my book and snooze to the sound of rain on the roof until noon.
Noon arrived and I had lunch and packed up and right on time the sun appeared and everything dried up.
Then it was the most beautiful day, a steady wind from exactly behind blew me all the way to Lumsden.
There was one amazing 15 kilometre straight road where I could go for minutes without pedaling at all.
It would have been absolute hell to cycle into the wind but on this day I had luck and the wind was with me.
Thankyou wind! I thanked it aloud several times.
25 km of the ride was on the state highway. Drivers have been really good and have passed quite widely.
The rest of the ride was on sealed back roads and the very good Round The Mountain cycleway, which is off-road through pasture alongside the river. The river was brown and swollen from the storm last night and it was just inches from flooding the bike path in places.
Tonight I'm at Lumsden campground. It is not particularly pretty, but it has showers and a kitchen so I'm happy.
It looks as if nothing has been done to the campground since about 1970.
Tomorrow I head towards Raes Junction, bypassing Gore on back country roads.
